More National Guard troops are being released in Washington, DC, as Trump supporters storm the Capitol thumbnail

The Pentagon announced in a statement quickly after Northam’s tweet that “the DC Guard has been activated to supply support to federal police in the District.” It stated the “law enforcement response will be led by the Department of Justice.”.
” We have totally triggered the DC National Guard to assist federal and regional law enforcement as they work to peacefully address the circumstance,” acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller stated in a follow-on statement.
” We are prepared to supply additional assistance as necessary and proper as requested by regional authorities,” he said. “Our people are sworn to protect the constitution and our democratic kind of government and they will act appropriately.”.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said on Twitter that the additional DC National Guard troops are being activated and released at the direction of President Donald Trump.

Trump spoke at Wednesday’s protest before the march on the Capitol and spread out falsehoods about the election. After a period of silence as his fans clashed with cops and forced their way into the Capitol, the president called for peace on Twitter.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan revealed Wednesday afternoon that he was sending out in extra law enforcement to support local authorities in Washington.

At my instructions, the @MDSP is sending out in troopers to assist the Metropolitan Cops Department and the United States Capitol Authorities. Later, Hogan said that he is mobilizing 500 Maryland National Guard troops “to assist restore law and order” in Washington.

Ahead of the protests, 340 National Guard troops were triggered in Washington to support regional law enforcement. The unarmed guard troops were mostly tasked with traffic and checkpoint management.
